The Port Elmsley drive in theatre was built in 1953 on land purportedly won in a poker game. Following its opening weekend, the theatre was closed after scores of cars became stuck in the marshy field. Tens of thousands of tons of gravel was trucked in to raise the land before the theatre could re-open.
